CUSTOM COURSES & CAMPUS LIAISON

Leeward CC Liaison: Joseph “Kepa” Badis

badis@hawaii.edu

STEP ONE: DESIGNATE A CAMPUS LIAISON

This person will serve as the primary contact person and point of communication for the Leeward CC Custom Course Coordinator  for all aspects of the partnership. We recommend this be the same person who coordinates the Open Classes program. Although it is important to have a team, it is also important to have a single point of contact for all of your Hawaiian language course endeavors.

The individual chosen should be able to execute all aspects of Steps One and Two and communicate directly with school campus personnel should any emergencies occur.

STEP TWO: FORMULATE A CAMPUS TEAM (PRINCIPAL, FACILITIES MANAGER, COORDINATOR)

Offering custom classes at a DOE school requires the participation of a team of personnel. This team will need to, at minimum, coordinate,  make decisions about, and implement :

  • The completion and filing of UHCC Option 2: http://uhcc.hawaii.edu/olelo/option2.php

  • Timely recruitment, admissions, health clearance, registration and book purchasing processes.

  • Ensure any current UH and UHCC students interested in the course are NOT receiving financial aid. Due to the MOA payment structure, students receiving financial aid may NOT participate in the sheltered version of this program.

  • The management of course requests, including course scheduling.

  • Facility provision and management, including classroom assignments, parking, bathrooms, security, and communicating with instructors about how they can regularly access and secure their classroom(s)

  • The provision of teaching supplies, including technology and Internet access.

  • A preliminary meeting with potential students to ensure they understand this is a credit-bearing college-level course.

  • The management of awarding students college and  HIDOE Professional Development credits when applicable.

  • Meeting internal deadlines to meet UHCC ones.

  • Emergency procedures.

  • Overall troubleshooting as needs arise.

STEP 3: CONTACT LEEWARD

  • The DOE campus PoC should contact Kepa Badis once the school has twenty potential participants for next steps.
