E ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi Kākou

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Can I audit a  course?

No, the scholarship cannot be used with an Audit grade option.  Note that a "C" or higher letter grade is required to continue using the benefit.

  2. I will be taking a course on a high school campus. Do I still need to complete the Health Clearances as part of the application process?

Yes, all applicants, regardless of current mode of delivery, must fulfill all application requirements including health clearances, which are mandated by Hawai'i state law. Applicants are being admitted as official students of Leeward CC; therefore, they are free to enroll in any course they qualify for throughout all offerings on site and off.

Click here for more information about health clearances.

  3. In my acceptance email, I’m being told I need to attend NSO.  Do I need to complete the orientation?

All DOE employees enrolled in the ʻŌlelo Program will be exempt from NSO. If you receive an email regarding NSO, please email us at leeolelo@hawaii.edu to request that the hold be taken off your account.

  4. Do I need to pay for books and other fees?

No.  The Department of Education will cover tuition and regular student fees (not including application or late fees).

  5. How long are the classes?

Our current class will be held in an online, asynchronous format, meaning there will not be designated meeting times.

  6. What days will classes meet?

Our current class will be held in an online, asynchronous format, meaning there will not be designated meeting times.

  7. Can the days and times be flexible? DOE schools have schedules that change due to teacher meeting days, special events, fall and spring breaks, etc.

No. This is a Leeward Community College course. Therefore, the class will follow the Leeward CC calendarClick here to see Leeward CC's Academic Calendar.

Furthermore, we want to ensure our students a quality experience, and as there is a limited pool of qualified Hawaiian language instructors, we will need to take their availability into account as well when scheduling classes.

  8. How intense would the class be?

While HAW 101-102 is built for those with little to no experience with the Hawaiian language, these are college-level credit-bearing courses (4 credits). Grading will be on an A-F scale.

  9. Can a person who took HAW 101 in college many years ago take the class again?

Yes, but if a DOE employee intends to have this credit count towards a degree, we highly advise the applicant see a Leeward CC counselor before registering.

  10. All classes are filled. What can I do?

Classes will be on a first-come, first-served basis.  If all classes are filled for a given term, you will need to apply for the next term at apply.hawaii.edu and register for a course in that term.

  11. I have not been able to get into a class.  Can more courses be offered?

In the interests of providing our students with a quality experience, we are scheduling courses based on the availability of qualified Hawaiian language teachers.  This pool is limited.  We are, however, doing our best to offer as many courses as possible given our resources.

  12. How do I receive professional development credit for taking the course?

Please inquire with your DOE school for information on this process.
